I can be a pretty judgy person. I’ve been known to comment in my head when I see a “wrong.” I’m not super proud of it, but at least I’m honest…to myself. Well, now I know I’m not alone in my judgmental thoughts…everyone else is doing it too, and Luvvie Ajayi, of Awesomely Luvvie, has officially put it in writing!
In her book titled, I’m Judging You: The Do-Better Manual, Luvvie puts it all out there about her thoughts, feelings, and judgments on our society. From your choice of boyfriend to how you act on social media to hard-core racial issues, Luvvie is not afraid to tell you how she feels.
As I read I’m Judging You, I found myself laughing out loud at the “side-eyes” and “shade” she throws at people for their crazy decisions. For example, tardiness. There are certain people who can never show up to anything on time. In Miami, we have the term “Cuban Time” for that very reason. Get it together people!
What about your “eBehavior?” You know what I mean…trolling on social media for hook ups, or to trash people behind the screen or using WAY TOO MANY hashtags. You’re being judged.
My favorite chapter? “How to Succeed at Business Failure.” I could NOT AGREE MORE with the perpetual “side-eye” to those who are trying to market their businesses. You know the ones…the really annoying in your face kind of marketers that make you want to turn them off. Not to mention they are using the wrong fonts (Comic Sans) and are super arrogant by calling themselves “visionary” or “Yeezus” (you know who I’m talking about). Those people need to be stopped. And Luvvie called them out.
Luvvie also covers deeper issues that our society faces such as racism, bigotry, and feminism. She dug deep into her own experiences as a Nigerian who moved to America. The issues she faced then and the ones that still linger in our communities. As a non-minority, I wasn’t able to identify with the issues personally but was able to get a clearer understanding of what others feel and how we can maybe begin to remedy it in the future.
Luvvie Ajayi uses her quick wit and humor to judge the human race for the crazy things we all do like being bad friends, using too many hashtags, our significant other choices and even stronger issues like racism, feminism, and bigotry. Not only does Luvvie judge society for our actions, but she is also honest about her personal short-comings and how she is judging herself as well. Get ready to dig deep and think about yourself while screaming “me too!” Great read!
