I have a tremendous sweet tooth! I love any type of cookie, cake, donut, cupcake, sugar by itself….
I get so sad when I go to the pantry and I find that my favorite sweets are missing. Ok, maybe not missing, but eaten. And I can’t really blame my family because most of the time it’s me.
One of my all-time favorite cookies are Oreos. There’s something about those chocolatey wafer cookies and a cold glass of milk that makes my mouth water. (My mouth is watering right now…)
Here’s where I’m a little weird. I’m not a huge fan of the frosting in the center. Yeah, I said it. The double & triple stuffed ones are completely lost on me. It’s just too much! There have been many debates in my family about this…they all think I’m weird. Don’t get me wrong…I’ll eat it, but if I have my preference, I’m just all about the cookie.
Now, I always fall into the trap at the store when Oreos are “buy one, get one free.” Who can resist? So with all this Oreo eating, it got me thinking…how would they taste if they were homemade? Of course I had to try it…
First up, making the cookies….
Whisk together the flour, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and sugar. All the yummy dry ingredients.
Beat in the butter and egg until dough comes together. Oh, sweet heaven!
Place the dough between 2 sheets of parchment paper and roll it out…between 1/8 and 1/4 inch thick.
Place the flat dough in the freezer for about 15 minutes.
Use a 2″ circle cookie cutter and make the cookies. (You can also use other shapes if you want, but authentic Oreos are round.)
Place the cookies on a parchment lined cookie sheet and bake for 9 minutes.
Allow them to cool completely before handling.
While these delicious round morsels cool, get started on the frosting.
Cream together butter, vanilla and sugar and gradually beat in the sugar until fluffy.
Transfer the filling to piping bag with a round tip. Or you can use a tip inside the cut end of a Ziploc.
Pipe the filling onto one cookie until you nearly cover it.
Place another cookie on top of the filling and press them together lightly.
There you have it…Homemade Oreos. Enjoy these bad boys with an ice cold glass of milk!
