Did you know that your teeth are directly linked to the health of your heart, your brain, and other major organs? Having healthy teeth is essential to your overall health.
You look at the ingredients in the food you eat, but have you ever really looked at what’s in your toothpaste?
One company is changing how you brush your teeth. Dr. Bruno Sharp, Miami’s leading Prosthodontist and fourth generation dentist, joined forces with two health conscious mom’s to develop a safe and healthy brushing alternative for the entire family. Dr. Sharp, together with his sister, Valeria Braga and entrepreneur, Vanessa Heegaard, recognized the harmful, long-term effects that traditional ingredients in popular brands, such as, fluoride, SLS, paraben and alcohol, had not only on themselves, but also most importantly on their children. They wanted to change the way families tended to their oral healthcare and decided to develop products that are fluoride-free, non-toxic, sustainable, safe to swallow and free of harmful ingredients, therefore in 2009 they developed Dr. Sharp Natural Oral, which is PETA certified and the packaging is BPA free.
I have to say, I was hesitant to say the least. I mean the toothpaste smelled and tasted good, but would it do the job? I equate foam to clean. I tell my kids to wash their hands and see bubbles…same with the teeth. Dr. Sharp’s Natural Toothpaste doesn’t make bubbles because it is SLS free. Did you know SLS is commonly used as a degreaser? YUCK!
After brushing, my mouth felt completely clean…no residual grittiness that I sometimes get. And after a whole day of eating (milkshakes and sticky buns included) the grittiness didn’t return. SOLD!
Did I mention the mouthwash? YUM! I am sooooo not a mouthwash fan. It really hurts the inside of my mouth. My eyes actually tear up whenever I use it, so I don’t use it. Dr. Sharp’s Natural Alcohol-Free Fresh Mint Mouthwash uses a fluoride-free formula that contains natural flavors. Witch Hazel Licorice, and Sage extracts with soothing properties combine with aromatic mint flavor to provide a fresh mouthwash for daily use after brushing. And it is actually safe to ingest it…not that I condone that practice. It is completely alcohol free and it doesn’t burn my mouth like the other ones.
Finding a toothpaste for kids that not only tastes good, but is doing its job is a hard task. Most people relate a minty taste to clean mouths. In kids’ toothpaste, that’s hard to find. Most companies put out bubble gum or fruity flavored pastes. I don’t know about you, but it’s almost as there is too much sugar in them to really be doing a good job.
Usually, my kids will use whatever I buy and I put in their bathroom. When they first put Dr. Sharp’s Wild Berry Kids’ Toothpaste on their brushes, they were weary. It didn’t look like what they are used to, it didn’t initially taste like what they’re used to, but they love it. And now their bathroom smells so yummy when they are done brushing…and the great scent lasts all day! I can’t really trust that they are doing the same job that I would do, because I have to foster independence, but I do trust that their toothpaste is working. Their teeth are cleaner than I’ve seen in a long time. (Besides after a visit to the dentist…)
